Keep a Clean Heart

Volunteering is one of the greatest experiences one could have in the lifetime. You gain as much as you give. In my case, it is even more. Going to Tugoujing Primary School in West China and seeing the whole different world, the affections and appreciations the local people and children poured on me every single day make me doubt whether I truly deserve so much of love.

Not knowing what to expect when I was in the crowded minivan heading for Tugoujing Primary School with other eight volunteers.

The first time we met the school, about 9 o’clock, 20th July. I fell in love with “her” at the first sight. Here is the West China, the countryside in Gansu Province, the school is located in the quiet village called Tugoujing.

I consider myself very fortunate as I am here with the children. Although they are shy, they show their love to teachers in another way. We often receive paper flowers, paper hearts and paper birds made by themselves.

I really knew immediately that everyone was extremely grateful for our being here. In class the children are attentive and want to learn, which does make the job easier.  Of course they get a bit chatty from time to time but they are just kids. Overall, I have been very happy and imagine this will continue throughout my stay. Everyone I have met even outside our school has welcomed us and shown great interest in what a volunteer does and are really keen to support us.

I gave all my students English names. They were very excited since it was their first time getting an English name. I can image that my students happily told their parents that they had an English name home.

What makes me feel at home is our team. Every member helps each other when in trouble. The team leader Sang who has volunteered this school once before is a prestigious man among the villages nearby. He is very strict with the students. All my teammates are nice and kind and very easy to get along with, that’s why I feel at home. Jiajia Wang is a crazy girl. We had shower together in the feculent toilet. Our outlooks on life and the world are similar and she can easily get my point and feeling. Kuifu Qiu is the one who has subtle emotion. Zhitong Liu is a quiet lady in her deep heart and a vegetarian because her Buddhism belief. Nowadays most Chinese people have no belief. Such a lady coming to my life makes me feel surprised. Minhao Wang is my roommate. She is a funny lady, sometimes acts like a man. The male in our team are afraid of her. Haha…Danfeng Zhang is very hard working, he loves his students very much and keeps trying to do many things in order to make students happy and better. Xinyu Wu is a “Gao duan hei” lady, which means she has lots of bad ideas just for fun. In the other hand, the nature of modest from her personality makes her easily get over of the troubles. Yulin Liu is a special one among us because she has been a teacher for more than ten years. She makes us feel safe in a way.

We were waiting for the Sunrise in Tengger Desert. Moved by the power of nature.

Since arriving at Tugoujing Primary School, my experiences have been many, varied and all positive. (All except for a little period of homesickness in the beginning that quickly passed) It has been a period of personal growth, greater understanding of life and very positive interactions with a wonderful and interesting culture. I have gained. Teaching the children and the rewarding feeling you get from them learning is enough for me to highly recommend this program.
