The vast grassland is dotted with black yaks and white sheep against a backdrop of deep blue skies. Traditional black tents where local Tibetans live are visible on the far away horizon. We will visit local nomads in their huge black tents. Some parts of the valley look like the Grand Canyon. After leaving the canyon lands we will approach the farming area of Repkong. The city of Repkong is mostly surrounded by sharp sandstone mountains. B/L/D

Day 05 Repkong / Xining

Repkong has been regarded as the hometown of Tibetan art. There are more than twenty small monasteries in the Repkong valley and all the monks from these monasteries are very well trained in Thangka painting, sculpture and embroidery. We will visit the Sangshang Gonpa to see the beautiful murals and Thangkas and to visit the cozy homes of local monks in the monastery where you can learn the way Tibetan artists work. We will also spend some time visiting Ronwo Gonchen which was founded in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). It was founded as a Sakyapa school monastery and changed to Gelukpa school in the late 17th century. Rongwo Gonchen means the big monastery of farmers as it is in the middle of the farming area of Amdo. After lunch we head for Xining along the great gorges of the Yellow River. B/L/D

Day 06 Xining / Kumbum / Koko Nor

Kumbum Monastery is just 26km from Xining and it is very important for Tibetans and Mongolians for being the birthplace of Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelukpa School, who was born here in the 14th century and passed away in Lhasa after establishing the Gelukpa School. The monastery was built in 1560 and was one of the six grand monasteries of the Gelukpa School in Tibet. You may find lots of Mongolian monks and pilgrims here besides the Tibetans. The huge turquoise blue Kokonor is the biggest holy lake in Tibet. "Koko Nor" means "the blue sea" in Mongolian and this is the reason the province is so called Qinghai Province: Qinghai means “the blue sea” in Chinese. After an early breakfast, we will start our long drive to Madoi, a small town at the upper reaches of the Yellow River. The Yellow River is the second longest river in China with a length of 5,464 km. Madoi is the county where the Yellow River has its source. Today we will drive 50km to visit Katok Gonpa, a very traditional and beautiful monastery high up in the mountain, founded in 1159 by Katok Dampa Deshek.
